🎸 Strum Pattern — Intro
Start the intro with a light strum — one strum per chord, let each ring out. The A-F#m-D-A progression has a natural flowing feel so do not rush it. Keep the strumming sparse and let the space breathe before the band fully enters.
For the stanza, use a simple down-down-up-down-up pattern at a steady pace. The chord progression is the same as the intro (A-F#m-D-A) so keep it consistent and controlled. Avoid filling too much space — the verse is about setting the atmosphere, not driving energy.
The chorus shifts to A-F#m-D-E. The E chord at the end creates a natural lift and tension that resolves back to A. Increase your strum intensity here — open up to a full down-up pattern and let the band push together. This is the main moment of the song.
🔊 Dynamics — Interlude
The interlude uses D-A/C#-Bm-A. Pull everything back here — drop to half the volume and let the keys or acoustic carry it. Use this moment to reset the dynamic before the bridge comes in. The A/C# (A chord with C# in the bass) gives a smooth descending bass line: D root, C#, B, A. Have your bassist follow that line.
The bridge uses the same D-A/C#-Bm-A progression as the interlude but build it up gradually with each repeat. First pass: light and open. Second pass: add full band. Third pass if needed: full energy, big strum, let the congregation sing loud. The descending bass line (D-C#-B-A) is the signature of this section — make sure bass and keys lock on to it.
→ Transitions — Bridge
From the bridge you can return to the chorus or end on an A chord with a big hold. If going back to chorus, build the last Bm-A into a strong hit on the downbeat of A to launch the chorus. If ending, slow the last A-A/C#-Bm-A down and resolve on A with the full band holding.
🎵 Band Direction
Keys: hold long pad tones throughout the verse. Let the guitar lead the rhythm. On the chorus, add a simple piano rhythm part to thicken the sound. Electric guitar: keep a clean or light crunch tone with some reverb. The song has a lot of space in the arrangement so resist the urge to fill everything. Bass: follow the root notes closely, and on the interlude and bridge walk the descending bass line D-C#-B-A to give the progression its character.
🎤 Vocal
The key of A sits comfortably for most worship leaders. The melody tends to sit in the middle register so there is room to go up on the chorus for energy. If the congregation struggles to sing along, consider dropping to G (capo 2 with A shapes) or F# (capo 4 with E shapes).
