Playing Tips

🎸 Strum Pattern — Intro

The intro is just D — one chord, held. Start with a single strum and let it ring, or fingerpick the chord slowly. Do not rush to fill the space. This open moment sets a reflective, reverent atmosphere before the song begins. Let it breathe for several beats before the stanza starts.

The stanza stays on D throughout. With only one chord, your job is to make it feel dynamic through rhythm and touch rather than harmonic movement. Try a gentle down-strum on beat 1, then a lighter strum on beats 2 and 4. The simplicity is intentional — let the lyrics carry the weight. Keep your strumming unobtrusive.

The pre-chorus introduces movement: Bm7-A-D/F#-G then Bm7-A-D. Bm7 (B minor 7) is softer than plain Bm and smooths the transition out of the static stanza. D/F# puts F# in the bass — on guitar, fret the F# at the 2nd fret of the low E string while holding a D shape. The bass line D/F#→G creates a stepwise ascent that builds energy into the chorus.

The chorus opens on a full D, then moves through Bm-G-D and D/F#-G-D. The D/F# gives the second line a slightly different colour — the F# bass creates forward motion toward G. Play the chorus with open, confident strums. This is the declaration of the song, so the sound should feel full and unrestrained.

🔊 Dynamics — Bridge

The bridge repeats A-Bm-G-D four times. Start the first pass softly — almost stripped back. Add one instrument on each repeat so by the fourth pass the full band is in. The final chord is marked as a hold: when you land on D the last time, let it ring out fully. Do not cut it short. Signal the band with eye contact or a raised hand for when to stop.

Transitions — Bridge

After the bridge's final held D, the worship leader will either return to the chorus or close the song. Agree on this in rehearsal. If returning to the chorus, come in softly on the D that opens the chorus — you are already on that chord, so the transition is seamless. If closing, hold the D and let it decay naturally.

🎵 Band Direction

Keys: soft pad throughout the stanza, fuller chords from the pre-chorus onward. The Bm7 is a natural pad chord — let it sustain. Acoustic guitar anchors the rhythm. Electric can add light swells on the chorus. Bass: follow root notes; on D/F#, play F# in the bass. Drums: minimal on the stanza (brush or just kick), enter fully on the chorus.

🎤 Vocal

Key of D is comfortable for most voices. Having two vocalists (as on the original recording) adds depth — if you have the team, have one lead the stanza and both join for the chorus. If leading solo, save your full voice for the chorus and bridge rather than pushing on the quiet stanza.
