Playing Tips
🎸 Strum Pattern — Intro
Start with a slow, clean fingerpick or just soft downstrokes. The song has a morning-prayer feel, so do not rush. Play it like you are quietly talking to God before anyone else wakes up. Gentle and unhurried is the right tone.
On the verse, lightly rest your palm against the strings near the bridge while you strum. This muffles the sound slightly and keeps the low strings from ringing too much. As the verse progresses, gradually lift your palm so more of the chord rings out. This creates a natural build within the verse itself.
The pre-chorus uses Am, G/B, C, and D. The G/B means you play a G chord but put your lowest finger on the B note of the low A string. This creates a smooth, stepping-down sound in the bass that leads naturally into the chorus. Ask your bass player to follow that same stepping motion.
The bridge uses C, D, Em, and D. Play the first pass softly, almost like a whisper. Add more instruments on each repeat. Many worship teams spend extra time here, letting the congregation respond in their own words between repeats. This is a good place for an extended worship moment.
🔊 Dynamics
The verse and chorus use the same four chords, so you have to show the difference through volume and energy, not new notes. Play the verse soft and the chorus loud. When the full band enters on the chorus, the congregation will feel it and sing louder naturally.
→ Transitions — Pre-Chorus
The pre-chorus ends on a D chord. This is your launch pad into the chorus. A short drum fill on that final D chord, then a clean start on beat 1 of the chorus G chord, is all you need. Keep it simple and tight.
🎵 Band Direction
Acoustic guitar is the center of this song. Keys can add a soft pad on the verse and fuller chords on the chorus. Electric guitar works well with a clean, light tone. Avoid heavy distortion. A cajon or light snare sounds better than a heavy drum kit on the verse.
🎤 Vocal
Key of G is accessible for both male and female voices. The melody is easy to learn. Notice that the lyrics shift from "I" in the verse to "we" in the bridge. Use that shift to invite the congregation to lean in and sing together more fully during the bridge.
